History

The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the sole ‘turret fighter’ to be deployed by the RAF. The concept behind the Defiant was that a fighter equipped exclusively with a turret full of machine guns could disrupt bomber formations and also protect itself from enemy fighters.

In its initial encounters during the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Defiant initially surprised enemy pilots and performed well. However, Luftwaffe pilots soon identified its vulnerabilities, particularly the absence of forward-firing guns, leading to its reassignment to night-time operations where it proved more effective.
