Description
ECP 245 is a magnetic compound based on special blends of magnetic additive compounded into Nylon 6 in such a way as to optimise physical and magnetic properties during processing.
APPLICATIONS
ECP 245 is recommended for use in applications that require the usual advantages normally associated with Nylon 6 where magnetic detection requirements also exist, e.g..
- Bearings and machine parts where frictional characteristics predominate, such as gear, slide, cams, and bearings .
- Parts that require good physical properties, for example cable ties, brush bristles
- Parts which need to exhibit good chemical resistance allied to magnetic properties.

RECOMMENDED PROCESSING CONDITIONS
MACHINE
It is recommended that an in-line reciprocating screw machine be used to injection mould ECP 245, but it is possible to process this material on plunger injection moulding machines.
EXTRUSION
Normal extrusion equipment should be used.
CYLINDER TEMPERATURE
260 – 280 °C depending on the size and complexity of the moulding.
MOULD TEMPERATURE
60 – 80°C; higher mould temperatures generally improve physical properties but the optimum is based on the size and complexity of the mouldings.
MOULD DESIGN
Nylon 6 compounds have a sharp melting point and low melt viscosity, therefore, mould surfaces should mate well to avoid excessive flash. Runners and gates should be as large as practicable to avoid denigration of physical and electrical properties. Sprues and runners should be as short as possible to avoid premature material freezing.
MOISTURE
ECP 245 readily absorbs moisture and should be dried to a moisture content of 0.1%. ECP 245 is normally supplied dried, but if for some reason the material has picked up moisture, then the material should be dried for a minimum of 4 hours at 100°C, in a recirculatory oven in shallow trays or by any other suitable drying method. Wet compound manifests itself as spitting on moulding.
USE OF REGRIND
Runners, sprues and scrap mouldings can be reground and blended with virgin material. Regrind additions should not exceed 10% by weight of the virgin material; otherwise some reduction in properties may be experienced.
DO NOT USE A MAGNETIC SEPARATOR IN THE MOULDING MACHINE AND HOPPER, THE GRAINS WILL SEPARATE AND STICK TO THE MAGNET!!
